thoughts on black friday

The store ads are pouring in already for Black Friday. I’ve participated a couple of times – and neither time was that great of an experience. It was memorable, but not for any of the right reasons. With stores now opening earlier and earlier on Friday – and now even ON Thanksgiving – it makes me a little sick. Did we forget what Christmas is about? Or Thanksgiving for that matter?

Our society is filled with greedy consumers who will go to great lengths for their deal, even resorting to violence. It’s absurd. People die getting trampled in these stores. REALLY??

Here’s a thought: refocus your priorities and save your money. I’m sure you’ll survive. You'll be less stressed this holiday season. And if the thought of missing out on Black Friday gives you a panic - see a therapist.

That’s all I have to say about THAT.

Three of my sisters and I camped out last year for our first Black Friday experience and the actual shopping part was pretty bad, but the time I got to spend with my sisters (sitting in the freezing rain, laughing about how crazy we were and remembering past holidays) was priceless.

I never thought we'd do it again, but we realized that we'd inadvertently started a tradition. This time, though, we aren't out for any crazy deals, so we'll hang at the back of the lines and enjoy the time together. I agree that it can bring out the worst in people, but staying up all night to prolong Thanksgiving a little longer can be fun too.

um, yeah. My black friday memories involve my mom waking me up in the middle of the night to go stand in line at Fred Meyer where people push and shove as soon as the doors open...my mom running to the sock bins with the other vultures to grab the good ones as quick as she can. I remember her shouting to my sister and I across the bins "find these grey ones! the black ones! which ones do you want?!". Then we stand in line to pay while we eat free donut holes, pay, go home and go back to bed. LOL. So hilarious. Just to get 50% off on socks!!!!

If you found a way to have fun and spend some quality time with your sisters, then I think that's great. I didn't mean to storm on anyone's parade! Well, not too much ; )

All I'm saying is that many people take it much too seriously and THAT is what annoys me about the tradition.

Mandee - YES, the whole Fred Meyer's sock thing. SO funny! Haha.

Hi,

Am a regular reader. First time posting :) Got to agree with what you said. My bf was asked to work at 11pm on Thanksgiving and he has been most upset about it since the day he learnt about it. I mean what is the point seriously? People have to celebrate their night after the heavy dinner and before they know it, oh they got to prepare for work.

That's just real dumb.

Great blog btw :)

Ayu - thanks for being a reader! And for stopping by to leave a comment.

I'm happy to know I'm not alone in thinking it's all silly. Hope you had a great holiday!
